About Bonecrusher Smith
James Smith, also known as “Bonecrusher”, is a former heavyweight boxer who posted a 44-17 career record with an epic 32 wins by knockout. Smith was born and raised in North Carolina and became interested in boxing and combat sports as a young man. After earning his associate’s degree from James Sprunt Community College in North Carolina and bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Shaw University he enlisted in the United States military as a prison guard. During that time he began competing as an amateur boxer and compiled an impressive 35-4 record before turning pro in 1981 at the age of 28. Five years after his debut fight he won the WBA World Heavyweight Title and would go on to capture the WBA Americas Heavyweight Title in 1990 and IBC Junior Heavyweight Title in 1991. Smith retired in 1999 and turned his focus towards helping young men and women steer clear of the streets and the life that is associated with it. With that mission in mind he founded the non-profit organization Champion For Kids Inc. in 2004 and now works with the Working Families Party in New York City.
