Brian Mitchell

Brian Mitchell is a retired NFL running back and return specialist who played 13 seasons in the league with the Washington Redskins, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the New York Giants. Prior to his time in the NFL, Mitchell was a standout quarterback at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where he became the first player in NCAA history to pass for more than 5,000 yards and run for over 3,000 yards. Following his graduation, Mitchell was selected in the 5th round of the 1990 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins, and immediately made an impact by returning the opening kickoff in the first preseason game. Later that season, Mitchell was forced into QB duty as the Redskins’ starting QB and backup were injured, and he went 3-5 for 40 yards and a rushing touchdown. Mitchell would continue to play for the Redskins for nine seasons, leading the NFL in return yards on multiple occasions, and helping the Redskins win Super Bowl XXVI. Mitchell went on to join the Philadelphia Eagles for two seasons, eventually playing one more season with the New York Giants before choosing to retire in 1999. Mitchell is considered one of the best return men in league history and he still owns some records to this day.
