About Bruce Arena
Bruce Arena played at Cornell University and was a fifth round selection of the New York Cosmos in the 1976 North American Soccer League. After one season playing professional soccer Arena moved back to teach at Cornell and then took a job as an assistant lacrosse coach and head soccer coach at the University of Virginia in 1978. Arena coached both sports for the Cavaliers until 1985 and then concentrated solely on soccer from 1986 to 1996. During his 18 seasons at the University of Virginia he won five NCAA National Championships in soccer and compiled 295 wins. In 1996 he left UVA to become the head coach of D.C. United in the MLS and led them to a 34-4 record during their inaugural season. After two seasons he was hired to head up the United States Men’s National Soccer Team where he remained until being hired to coach the New York Red Bulls in 2006. In 2008 he took over as the head coach of the Los Angeles Galaxy where he has compiled 89 wins over the last six seasons.
