About Cecil Cooper
Cecil Cooper is a former first baseman in the MLB and former manager of the Houston Astros. The Boston Red Sox selected Cooper in the 1968 MLB Draft and he made his Major League debut with the Red Sox in 1972. Prior to the 1977 season, Cooper was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers where he spent the remainder of his playing career. In his professional career, Cooper was a 5x All-Star, 2x Golden Glove Award winner, 3x Silver Slugger Award winner, 2x AL RBI champion and he won the Roberto Clemente Award in 1983. In 1982, Cooper and the Brewers made an appearance in the World Series, but they fell to the St. Louis Cardinals. Cooper holds the Milwaukee record for hits. On August 27, 2007, Cooper was named the interim manager of the Houston Astros and he became the first African American field manager in Astros’ history. On September 21, 2009, Cooper was released from the Astros. Cooper was elected into the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007.
