Corey Hirsch

Corey Hirsch served as an NHL goaltender and Olympic silver medalist while working as a mental health advocate. Born in Medicine Hat Alberta on July 1 1972 Corey Hirsch grew up in Calgary before the New York Rangers selected him in 1991. The Rangers drafted him before he played for the Vancouver Canucks and Washington Capitals and Dallas Stars in the NHL. Hirsch won a Stanley Cup with the Rangers in 1994 while playing for the team and he received a silver medal at the 1994 Winter Olympics while representing Canada.

Hirsch battled obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) during his playing career yet kept his condition hidden until he revealed it in his later years. In 2017 he wrote for The Players' Tribune about his life experiences which exposed the dual challenges he faced during his playing career. Through his public disclosure Hirsch initiated a wider dialogue about mental health issues in sports.

Hirsch dedicated himself to coaching and broadcasting after his retirement from professional hockey. Hirsch worked as a goaltending coach for the Toronto Maple Leafs and St. Louis Blues before becoming a Vancouver Canucks radio analyst. His 2022 book The Save of My Life: My Journey Out of the Dark builds upon his personal experiences with mental health and recovery.

Hirsch now resides in Vancouver where he focuses on mental health advocacy work. Through his role as national youth ambassador at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) he co-hosts the podcast Blindsided with Dr. Diane McIntosh and delivers presentations to help people understand mental illness better and fight its associated stigma.
