About Cuonzo Martin
Cuonzo Martin has a long career as a head coach in college basketball that is bookended by runs at Missouri State. In his first stint with the Bears, Martin went 61-41 in three seasons from 2008-11, winning the Missouri Valley Conference in his final year.
Martin went on to power conference head coaching jobs at Tennessee, Cal, and Missouri. He led each program to the NCAA Tournament during his respective tenures. His best year came with the Vols when he went 24-13 and landed in the Sweet Sixteen in 2017.
Before becoming a head coach, Martin was an assistant for eight years at his alma mater, Purdue. Martin was a college star as a player, leading the Boilermakers to back-to-back Big Ten titles and being an all-conference First Team selection in 1995.
Martin played in the NBA and professionally overseas before being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Martin fought admirably, overcoming his challenge, and the Cuonzo Martin Challenge Award was established in his name to help raise funds for cancer research.
