About Dale Murphy
Dale Murphy is a retired MLB outfielder and first baseman who played 18 years in the league with three different teams. His professional career began with the Atlanta Braves in 1976, appearing in 19 games as the team’s catcher. Two years later, Murphy would serve as the first baseman for the Braves, hitting 23 home runs but also only a .226 batting average. His big break came in 1980 when he switched from first base to the outfield, and he would go on to earn his first of seven All-Star nominations. In 14 seasons with the Braves, Murphy would win two NL MVP awards along with five Gold Gloves and four Silver Slugger awards. His time with the Braves earned him the rare honor of having his number retired by the team following his retirement. In 1990, the Braves traded Murphy to the Philadelphia Phillies, where he would play for two seasons before retiring with the Colorado Rockies after their inaugural 1993 season.
