About Dan Gable
Dan Gable is a retired Olympic wrestler and head coach at Iowa University. A talented high school wrestler, Gable was an undefeated state champion throughout his sophomore, junior, and senior years. His high school success led to him earning a scholarship to Iowa State University, where he competed on the varsity team for three years, winning two national titles and finishing with a 181-1 record. In 1971, Gable began competing in international events, eventually making his Olympic debut at the 1972 Munich Games, winning the gold medal after not surrendering a single point throughout the entire competition. Following his retirement from competing, Gable became the wrestling head coach at the University of Iowa in 1976. His tenure at Iowa would be legendary, as he is commonly referred to as one of the best wrestling coaches in NCAA history. Over 21 years as head coach, Gable won 15 NCAA titles, 106 Big Ten Championships, and a 355-21-5 overall record. His success is unmatched, and his contributions to the team have turned Iowa into a collegiate wrestling powerhouse.
