Dan McCarney

Dan McCarney is a collegiate football coach who most notably served as head coach at the University of North Texas. Prior to his time as a head coach, McCarney played football at the University of Iowa from 1972 to 1974. In 1977, McCarney started his coaching career as an assistant at the University of Iowa, serving in this role for 12 years before leaving in 1990 to join Barry Alvarez at the University of Wisconsin. McCarney received his first head coaching offer with Iowa State University in 1995, setting school records for both wins and losses. His 11 seasons at ISU made him the longest tenured coach in the Big 12 at the time of his resignation, and he guided the Cyclones to a 56-85 record with one conference title in 2004. Following his resignation in 2006, McCarney became the defensive line coach at the University of South Florida, leaving one year later to serve the same position at the University of Florida. In three years at UF, McCarney produced top talent, earning enough success to be hired as the head coach at the University of North Texas in 2011.
