Dan Muse has earned his position as a well-known American ice hockey coach through his broad experience in different levels of the sport. The July 21, 1982 birth in Canton Massachusetts marked the beginning of Dan Muse's hockey career which started when he was young while being shaped by the strong hockey tradition of his area. At Milton Academy Dan Muse started his competitive hockey career. After Milton Academy he devoted himself to developing his hockey abilities at Stonehill College. The educational establishment taught him about discipline and teamwork principles which Muse used as fundamental elements in his coaching approach.

Muse entered coaching after his college years by working at high school and college teams. During his time at Yale University as assistant coach he actively contributed to the Bulldogs achieving their 2013 NCAA national championship title. He began his first head coaching position with the Chicago Steel of the United States Hockey League (USHL) in 2017 and brought them the Clark Cup championship. Muse joined the Nashville Predators as an assistant coach to help the team achieve their Presidents' Trophy victory during the 2017–18 season after working as an assistant coach.

Muse became the head coach of the USA Hockey National Team Development Program's Under-18 team in 2020 before leading them to a gold medal at the 2023 World U18 Championships. His experience with player development and coaching brought him back to the NHL to work as an assistant coach for the New York Rangers during the 2023 season. Muse became the 23rd head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins on June 4, 2025 when he received the responsibility to guide the team through transition while developing both young and veteran players.
