About Dave Hakstol
Dave Hakstol made history as the first head coach of the Seattle Kraken. Hakstol coached the franchise for their first three seasons, making the playoffs in year two.
What may even be more of a career highlight, however, is how Hakstol made his breakthrough in the NHL. No coach since Herb Brooks in 1987 went straight from a college job to the pros until Hakstol was hired by the Philadelphia Flyers in 2015. Hakstol had two playoff appearances in parts of four seasons with Philly.
He spent 11 seasons with the University of North Dakota before getting the NHL call.Overall, he compiled a 289-141-43 record while piloting the program.The school went to the NCAA Tournament in each season of his tenure and also advanced to the Frozen Four seven times.
Hakstol’s teams won three conference championships and he was a two-time conference Coach of the Year.His coaching career started at his alma mater with an assistant position in 2000.Following his playing career at North Dakota, Hakstol did spend five seasons in the minors.
