Dave Hakstol Biography

Dave Hakstol is making history as the first head coach of the Seattle Kraken. His rise to the top of his industry stands out even more, however. No coach since Herb Brooks in 1987 had gone straight from a college job to the pros, since Hakstol was hired by the Philadelphia Flyers. He spent 11 seasons with the University of North Dakota before getting the NHL call. Overall, he compiled a 289-141-43 record while piloting the program. The school went to the NCAA Tournament in each season of his tenure and also advanced to the Frozen Four seven times. Hakstol’s teams won three conference championships and he was a two-time conference Coach of the Year. His coaching career started at his alma mater with an assistant position in 2000. Following his playing career at North Dakota, Hakstol did spend five seasons in the minors.
