About David Kopay
David Kopay is a California boy from Sherman Oaks who grew up loving the game of football. In college earned All-American honors as a running back at the University of Washington and went on to make his NFL dreams come true when he signed a contract with the San Francisco 49ers in 1964. Kopay played three seasons in San Francisco and then joined the Detroit Lions, Washington Redskins, and New Orleans Saints from 1968 to 1971. In 1972 he retired as a member of the Detroit Lions with 876 career rushing yards and three career touchdowns. Since his retirement he has become a board member for the Gay and Lesbian Athletics Foundation and an ambassador for the Federation of Gay Games. In 1977 he published his biography, The David Kopay Story, which became a New York Times best seller. After the success of his book in 2007 he announced that he would be leaving a $1 million endowment to the University of Washington Q Center.
