About Derek Mason
Derek Mason has been a defensive specialist since his days as a cornerback at Northern Arizona University.After his playing career came to an end he took up the game on the coaching side of the ball in 1994 and began working his way up the coaching ladder. After stops at San Diego Mesa College, Weber State, Idaho State, Bucknell, Utah, Saint Mary’s, New Mexico State, and Ohio as an assistant, he landed a job in the NFL as the defensive backs assistant with the Minnesota Vikings. He’d remain with the Vikings until 2009. In 2010 Stanford University offered him a position as an associate head coach and defensive coordinator. He thrived in that position from 2010 to 2013 before being offered the opportunity to take over at the helm at Vanderbilt University.
Vanderbilt tapped Mason as their new head coach in 2014 due to his ability to get the most out of his players while also proving to be one of the top all-around coaches in the country. In 2012 he was nominated for the Broyles Award, presented annually to the top assistant coach of the year.Mason spent seven seasons leading the Commodores program before taking a job as defensive coordinator at Auburn. After one season as Auburn, he took the same position at Oklahoma State.
