About Derek Parra
Derek Parra made history in 2002 when he became the first Mexican-American speed skater to compete in, and medal, in the Olympic Games. His gold and silver medal winning performances in the 1500-meter and 5000 meter in Salt Lake City made him an American hero, and solidified him as one of the most decorated speed skaters of all-time.
Parra began skating at the age of 14 and quickly became one of the most talked about competitors in the sport. His combination of natural style and form would take him to the heights of speed skating leading into the 2002 Olympics. Prior to his medal winning performances he competed in the 1998 Olympic Games and also won a silver medal at the World Single Distance Championship in 2001.
Since his retirement he has remained active in the sport community and has served as a valuable ambassador for Team USA speed skating. Currently he is the sport director at Utah Olympic Oval and travels the country speaking at a variety of events.
