Derek Sanderson

Former NHL player Derek Sanderson stands as the perfect example of someone who has successfully remade his or her life. While he had a successful hockey career, Sanderson was brought down by substance abuse and a series of bad investments. He eventually went to rehab, got clean, and went into broadcasting with NESN for a decade. Sanderson wanted to do more to help others avoid his path and he became a financial advisor to athletes in the 1990s. Currently, he is the Managing Director of The Sports Group in Boston. Sanderson spent the first eight seasons of his career with the Boston Bruins and won two Stanley Cups. He was a star from his first season, winning the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s Rookie of the Year. In 1970, Sanderson assisted Bobby Orr on an overtime goal that won the Bruins their first Stanley Cup in 29 seasons. His unique journey through the sports world was chronicled in his 2012 autobiography, “Crossing the Line: The Outrageous Story of a Hockey Original.”
