About Ed Too Tall Jones
At 6’9” tall, it’s no wonder Ed Jones earned the nickname “Too Tall." His iconic career in pro football made that moniker stand the test of time.
Jones was not originally a football star and only played three games on the gridiron in high school. He received numerous offers to play Division 1 basketball and overtures from teams in Major League Baseball, eventually ending up at Tennessee State University to play basketball.
After two years, however, Jones left the hardwood for good and became a two-time All-American in football and won two black college national championships at Tennessee State.
In 1974, the Dallas Cowboys selected Jones with the top pick in the NFL Draft and he went play all 15 NFL seasons with the franchise. He was part of the famed “Doomsday Defense,” winning a Super Bowl and being selected to three Pro Bowls.
Outside of football, Jones even had a successful turn a pro boxer between stints with the Cowboys, compiling a 6-0 record. Due to his prodigious size and national notoriety, he also made appearances as an actor and with the World Wrestling Federation.
