Eliud Kipchoge

Eliud Kipchoge (born November 5, 1984, in Kapsisiywa, Nandi County, Kenya) is widely regarded as the greatest marathoner of all time. He started his career on the track where he won bronze and silver in the 5,000 m at the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Olympics and won the world championship gold in Paris which indicated his future success.

In 2012, Kipchoge shifted to road running and won his first marathon in Hamburg (2013) and quickly built a reputation for being consistent and enduring. He won all six Abbott World Marathon Majors and won four London and five Berlin titles while breaking the official world record in Berlin with 2:01:39 in 2018 and 2:01:09 in 2022.

In 2019, he achieved a historic feat at the INEOS 1:59 Challenge in Vienna by running a marathon in 1:59:40 although the achievement was not ratified it became a global benchmark for human performance. Kipchoge also won Olympic marathon gold at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 and received the Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya as well as BBC World Sport Star of the Year (2019).

Kipchoge is known for his simple way of life and his disciplined training at high altitude and his philosophy which states “No human is limited” and he is a symbol of mental strength and perseverance. He has spent his entire career training in Kaptagat near Eldoret where his family lives and continues to live and train there while also serving as a mentor and ambassador for running and environmental conservation.

As he prepares for his last major competitions Kipchoge is building his legacy past competition. He works with Nike to develop innovative running shoes while heading the Eliud Kipchoge Foundation to promote education and sustainability in Kenya and tells his story as a motivational speaker. His life and career teach enduring lessons about discipline and teamwork and the belief in human potential.
