About Elvin Hayes
Elvis Hayes, one of the first two African American players at the University of Houston, helped lead the Cougars to several NCAA Division 1 tournaments and ended the UCLA Bruins 47-game winning streak in 1968 in what many called "The Game of the Century." The Sporting News Player of the Year, Hayes was selected in the first round of the NBA Draft by the San Diego Rockets. In his rookie season, Hayes led the NBA in scoring with 28.4 ppg and is still the last rookie to ever do so. Hayes went on to play with the Washington Bullets and along with fellow Hall of Famer Wes Unseld helped lead the Bullets to three NBA Finals appearances including a Finals Championship in 1978. Hayes was traded to the Houston Rockets where he was able to end his career, finishing fourth in career rebounds in NBA history with 16,279. After retirement, Hayes became the voice of Houston Cougars basketball and in 1990 was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
