About Gary Matthews
Gary Matthews had a very successful 16-year career as a Major League Baseball outfielder. Matthews batted .281 and collected over 2,000 hits in those seasons. He was successful right off the bat, winning National League Rookie of the Year honors in 1973. In 1979, Matthews made his only All-Star team, batting .304 with 27 home runs and 90 RBI. Once he got to the Philadelphia Phillies in 1981, he also proved to be a clutch postseason performer. Matthews had seven homers in 19 playoff games and was the MVP of the 1983 NLCS for the Phillies. In retirement, he has had various roles in coaching and broadcasting. Most recently, Matthews was an analyst for the Phillies from 2007-2013. His son, Gary Matthews Jr., would also follow in his footsteps and had a 12-year baseball career of his own.
