About Gary Suter
Gary Suter is a former professional defenseman who played for the NHL. Being the youngest of five, Suter followed in his older brothers’ footsteps into hockey. After high school, Suter joined the Dubuque Fighting Saints program in the United States Hockey League. Suter was eligible for the 1982 NHL Entry Draft, but his size made him go undrafted. The Calgary Flames selected Suter as the 180th overall pick in the 1984 Draft after he was overlooked in the 1983 Draft. Suter was disappointed by the selection. When Kari Eloranta left prior to the start of the 1985-86 season it opened a spot on the Flames’ defense. Suter quickly earned a spot on the team and became one of the best defenseman on the team. Suter also played for the Chicago Blackhawks and the San Jose Sharks. Suter is a two-time Olympian where he won a silver medal in 2002. He is an honored member of the United States Hockey Hall of Fame, inducted in 2011.
