About Jason Collins
Jason Collins began his NBA career with the New Jersey Nets in 2001 after an All-American career at Stanford University. In his rookie year with the Nets he played a significant role in the team’s first ever NBA Finals birth in 2002. The next season he earned the job as the Nets starting center and helped lead the team back to the NBA Finals for a second consecutive season, earning him a $25 million contract extension through 2008. Prior to the end of the 2008 season he was traded the Memphis Grizzlies. Over the course of the next five seasons he played with the Grizzlies, Timberwolves, Celtics, and Wizards before becoming a free agent at the end of the 2013 season. After the 2013 season he made headlines when he became the first NBA player to come out publicly as being gay. A year later he was signed to a contract by the Brooklyn Nets and became the first openly gay player to play in the NBA.
