About Jeff Backus
Jeff Backus, born in Midland, Michigan in 1977, grew up as a standout athlete in both football and baseball. In high school, he was a USA Today All-America selection and was chosen as the Gwinnett Touchdown Club’s Lineman of the Year. As a result, Backus chose to pursue a collegiate football career at the University of Michigan and led his Wolverines to the AP national championships. He was then selected in the first round of the 2001 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions and played with the Lions for the entirety of his twelve season career. Backus’ impressive streak of starting and playing in 186 games came to an end when he was injured in 2012. He was forced to retire due to the injury but could not leave his beloved lions entirely. Backus went back to become a part time coaching intern with the Detroit Lions and will always hold his twelve seasons as an offensive tackle wearing number 76 for the Lions very close to his heart.
