About Jim Bates
Jim Bates was a longtime NFL assistant coach and noted defensive mind. Bates served as the defensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons, Miami Dolphins, Green Bay Packers, Denver Broncos, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Dolphins were always a top-ranked defense under his watch from 2000-04. Following the firing of head coach Dave Wannstedt, Bates led the team on an interim basis and finished with a 3-4 record. He got his first NFL job as a defensive line coach for the Cleveland Browns in 2001. Prior to that, Bates served as the defensive coordinator at Florida in Steve Spurrier’s first season. He got his first college coaching position as a graduate assistant at his alma mater Tennessee in 1968. Originally from Pontiac, Michigan, Bates went to Oxford High School and is a member of the school’s athletics hall of fame. His son Jeremy has been an offensive coach at both the pro and college levels and son James is a sports broadcaster.
