About Joe Kapp
Joe Kapp played quarterback at the University of California from 1982 to 1986 and earned All-American honors in 1959 after leading the Golden Bears to a win in the Rose Bowl. During that time he also starred on the Golden Bears basketball team and led them to consecutive Pacific Coast Championships from 1957 to 1958. After earning his degree in physical education in 1959 he was selected in the 18th round of the NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins but chose instead to start his career in the Canadian Football League with the Calgary Stampeders. He’d go on to play nine years in the CFL and two years in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings, earning a Pro Bowl selection in 1969. After his retirement in 1970 he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and Canadian Football Hall of Fame. In the 1970’s and 80’s he pursued a successful acting career and became the head coach at his alma mater. In his first season as the head coach at Cal he was named Pac-10 Head Coach of the Year.
