About John McLaren
John McLaren grew up in Texas and developed a love for America’s past time as a youngster. After graduating from Westbury High School in 1970 he played baseball at Blinn College, the University of St. Thomas and Houston Baptist University before being selected in the 7th round of the 1970 MLB Draft by the Houston Astros as a catcher. He played seven seasons in the Astros minor league system, making it all the way to Triple-A, before turning his focus to coaching at the professional level. From 1979 to 1985 he managed in the Toronto Blue Jays minor league system, and then got the call to the big leagues in 1986 as the Blue Jays third base coach. He remained in that position until being named the bullpen coach for the Red Sox in 1991. He served in that same position with the Reds in 2002 and then coached in the big leagues with the Seattle Mariners and Tampa Bay Devil Rays from 1993 to 2005. In 2007 he was hired as the manager of the Seattle Mariners after serving as the third base coach for Team USA in the 2006 World Baseball Classic. He served in that role for two seasons, and then managed the Washington Nationals for one season in 2011.
