About Jonathan Smith
Jonathan Smith has been the head football coach at Oregon State and Michigan State. Smith had tremendous success in his first head coaching stint at his alma mater, Oregon State. He rebuilt the Beavers program from 2018-2023, enduring three losing seasons prior to a 7-6 campaign in 2021. In 2022, Smith won ten games and was named Co-Pac 12 Coach of the Year. He guided OSU to top 25 finishes in each of his final two seasons.
As a player, Smith was a walk-on quarterback at OSU. He still excelled, ending up as a four-year starter for the Beavers. Smith led Oregon State to a historic season in 2001, going 11-1 and winning a share of the Pac-10 title. He was named MVP of the Fiesta Bowl and the team finished ranked fourth in the country. Smith also began his coaching career with the Beavers, serving as a graduate assistant from 2002-03. He went on to coach quarterbacks at Idaho and serve as the offensive coordinator at Montana before landing on Chris Petersen's Boise State staff in 2012. He coached with Petersen at Boise for two seasons and joined him at Washington for four more before taking the Oregon State job.
