About Jud Heathcote
Jud Heathcote coached basketball at the high school level for 14 seasons before heading to college for another 35 years. He got his start in college basketball as a player at Washington State University from 1946 to 1949. In 1950 he was hired to head up the West Valley High School varsity team in Washington and remained in that position until joining Washington State University as an assistant in 1964. After seven years at his alma mater he was hired as the head coach at Montana in 1971. During his five seasons at the helm in Montana he led the Grizzlies to 80 wins and a Big Sky Conference title in 1974-75. In 1976 he was hired as the head coach at Michigan State, where he remained for 19 seasons. During that span he led his teams to 339 wins, three Big Ten Championships, nine NCAA Tournament appearances and an NCAA National Championship in 1979. Coach Heathcote retired in 1995 with 419 career wins, two Big Ten Coach of the Year awards and an NABC National Coach of the Year Award, which he won in 1990. In 2009 he took his rightful place in the College Basketball Hall of Fame.
