About Kerry Wood
When he first came on to the scene, Kerry Wood was a pitching phenom. As a rookie with the Chicago Cubs, Wood tied the record for strikeouts in a single game with a 20-strikeout performance against the Houston Astros. He finished 13-6 and won the National League Rookie of the Year award.
At times, injuries held back Wood’s career, but he had several great seasons in Chicago. In 2003, he made his first All-Star team and helped the Cubs make it all the way to the NLCS. He reached 1,000 strikeouts after just 853 innings pitched, the fastest in baseball history.
Wood was converted to a reliever in 2007 and made his second All-Star team as a closer in 2008. He would go on to pitch for the Cleveland Indians and the New York Yankees before playing his final two seasons with Chicago.
Wood has continued to have a presence in Chicago in retirement and was inducted into the Cubs Hall of Fame in 2024. The Wood Family Foundation also raised millions for Chicago Public Schools while active from 2011-2024.
