About Lanny McDonald
Lanny McDonald is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player for the NHL. McDonald learned how to skate at the age of 5, and immediately developed a passion for hockey. He began playing organized hockey at the age of 6. McDonald’s junior career began in 1969 with the Lethbridge Sugar Kings of the tier II Albert Junior Hockey League. McDonald was drafted in 1973 and he was considered a top junior prospect in both the National Hockey League and the World Hockey Association. McDonald was drafted as the 4th overall pick to the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was also selected 10th overall in the WHA Draft by the Cleveland Crusaders. McDonald chose to play with the Maple Leafs and he made his NHL debut on October 10, 1973. The highlight of McDonald’s career in Toronto came in the 1978 Stanley Cup Playoffs against the New York Islanders. McDonald was traded to the Colorado Rockies in 1979 and the trade devastated him. McDonald was traded again in 1981 to the Calgary Flames where he spent his final years playing hockey. McDonald announced his retirement from playing on August 28, 1989. He still is in Hockey, but as management now.
