About Mark Byington
Mark Byington serves as the head men's basketball coach at Vanderbilt University. The Vanderbilt University appointed him as their head coach on March 25, 2024 after he achieved success at James Madison University (JMU) where he led the Dukes to their best season ever with 32 wins and their first NCAA Tournament victory since 1983.
During his time at Georgia Southern University from 2013 to 2020 Byington achieved a 131–97 record while becoming the first coach to lead the program to three consecutive 20-win seasons.
During his first year at Vanderbilt Byington led the Commodores to a 20–13 record while earning their first NCAA Tournament spot since 2017. The team achieved two major victories against top-10 ranked opponents Tennessee and Kentucky which became Vanderbilt's first multiple top-10 wins in a season since 2007.
The fast-paced high-scoring offense combined with strong defensive fundamentals represents the core of Byington's coaching approach. His ability to develop players both on and off the court has created a culture of excellence and accountability. Through his leadership he has brought new life to programs while earning respect from the entire collegiate basketball community.
