Matt Doherty

Matt Doherty is a legendary college basketball player and coach, best known for his association with the University of North Carolina. Doherty first started for the Tar Heels as a sophomore, earning All-ACC Tournament Second Team honors and helping the squad win the 1982 National Championship. He went on to earn two more All-ACC Tournament selections in his career. Doherty led UNC in assists as a junior and senior while becoming just the second player in ACC history with over 1,000 career points, 400 rebounds and 400 assists.

After his college career, Doherty was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers, but never played in the NBA. He took several corporate jobs, including working on Wall Street for three years, but basketball was always calling him back. He got into coaching on the AAU level in Charlotte before being hired as an assistant at Davidson. After three years there, he became an assistant at Kansas. The Jayhawks made the NCAA Tournament in each of his seven seasons and Doherty became regarded as one of the top recruiters in the country.

Doherty's first head coaching gig came in 1999 at Notre Dame. He led the Irish to a 22-15 record and NIT Finals appearances in his only season before taking over at his alma mater. In his first year at North Carolina, the team won the ACC regular season championship and Doherty was named AP Coach of the Year. After three seasons guiding the Tar Heels, he went on to head coaching positions at FAU and SMU. Doherty has also spent time as an associate commissioner for the Atlantic 10 Conference.
