About Mike Smith
Mike Smith had a distinguished tenure in the NFL as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator. Smith is the all-time wins leader in Atlanta Falcons history, with an overall record of 66-46 in seven seasons. He guided Atlanta to two NFC South Division titles and a trip to the NFC Championship Game in 2012. During his first season with the Falcons, they reached the playoffs and Smith was named AP NFL Coach of the Year.
Smith had gained prior pro coaching experience as the defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2003-07. He won a Super Bowl as an assistant on the defensive staff of the Baltimore Ravens during the 2000 season. Prior to arriving in Baltimore in 1999, all of Smith's coaching experience had come on the collegiate level at San Diego State, Moorehead State, and Tennessee Tech.
Smith attended East Tennessee State University from 1977-81 where he played linebacker and was a two-time team defensive MVP twice. After college, Smith played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the CFL for 1982 before he decided to retire as a player.
