Mike Weir

Michael Richard Weir, 44, is a Canadian professional golfer on the PGA Tour, who is best known for winning the Masters in 2003 and becoming the first Canadian male to ever win a professional major championship. Weir is also noted for being only the second left-handed golfer to win any of the four majors in PGA history since the early 1970s.

During his rise to stardom, Weir spent over 110 weeks ranked in the Top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking between the years of 2001-2005. His best ranking to date would come months following his Masters victory, when Weir tied for third at the U.S. Open, which moved him up to No.3 on the Official World Golf Ranking. Weir would later be awarded for his exceptional performance in 2003 by receiving the Lou Marsh Trophy, the trophy awarded to the Canadian athlete of the year. He would maintain his top ten ranking into 2004.

In 2007, after suffering a decline in his world ranking, he almost didn’t qualify for the Presidents Cup. However, he got the opportunity to play in the tournament he helped bring to Canada after International team captain, Gary Player, selected Weir to join the team. It would turn out to be a tremendous move, as Weir went on to beat the former No.1 overall, Tiger Woods, in a contested battle, even though his team would wound up losing the Cup. In interviews, Weir considers his win versus Tiger Woods to be “even more special than winning the Masters.”

Following, injuries would plague his career, causing Weir to miss the entire 2010 and 2011 season. Today, Weir is in the bottom-tier of golfers, who recently just finished inside the top-125 on the PGA money list.
