About Ron Guidry
Ron Guidry became a pitcher at the University of Louisiana Lafayette and in 1975 was drafted by the New York Yankees. He pitched in minor roles in 75 and 76 and after beginning the 77 season as a relief pitcher he was added to the starting rotation to finish the 77 season. Guidry helped lead the Yankees to consecutive World Series titles in 77 and 78 and between the two postseasons he went 4-0 with 3 complete games with only 9 earned runs allowed. Guidry continued to play for the Yankees until 1988, being awarded 4 trips to the All Star game, 5 Golden Gloves, and was the AL Cy Young winner in 1978. Guidry was a fan favorite of the Yankees and is believed to have started the tradition of Yankees fans standing and clapping for a strikeout when opposing batters get two strikes on them. In 2003, his #49 jersey was retired on Ron Guidry Day. He then went on to spend three seasons as a pitching coach for Joe Torres Yankees from 2006-2008.
