About Ron Rivera
Ron Rivera has had a storied life in football as a former Super Champion player and two-time NFL Coach of the Year. He attended the University of California as a linebacker where in his senior season he was a consensus All-American. After leaving the Golden Bears, where he held the record for all-time sacks and tackles at one point, he was drafted by the Chicago Bears.
Rivera went on to play for the Bears for 9 seasons, helping the team to a Super Bowl victory in 1985. After his retirement in 1992, Rivera began a coaching career in the NFL. He started with Chicago before moving up the ranks as the linebackers coach for the Philadelphia Eagles and then was hired as the defensive coordinator for the Bears. Rivera then moved to San Diego as a linebackers coach for the Chargers and was promoted to defensive coordinator for the team in 2008.
In 2011, Rivera was given his first opportunity at head coaching when he was hired by the Carolina Panthers. He experienced great success over his eight-plus seasons with the franchise, going 76-63 overall with three NFC South Division titles. He was named the AP NFL Coach of the Year in 2013 and 2015. Rivera also led the Panthers to an appearance in Super Bowl 50. He left Carolina after the 2019 season becoming the head coach of the Washington Redskins for four years.
