Sir Ranulph Fiennes is an adventurer and prolific writer. Fiennes served in the British Army for 8 years and was seconded to the Special Air Services where he specialized in demolitions. Fiennes has been an adventurer since the 1960s. In 1969, Fiennes led an expedition up the White Nile on a hovercraft and in 1970 he led an expedition on Norway’s Jostedalsbreen Glacier. From 1979-82, Fiennes, Oliver Shepard and Charles R. Burton took part in the Transglobe Expedition. As a part of this expedition, Fiennes and Burton completed the Northwest Passage. Fiennes led an expedition that discovered what could be an outpost city or Iram in Oman in 1992. In March 2007, Fiennes faced his fear of heights and climbed the Eiger by its North Face. On May 20, 2009, Fiennes reached the summit of Mount Everest and became the oldest British person to achieve it. His career as an author has grown alongside his career as an adventurer. He has received many awards and recognitions for his accomplishments as an adventurer.
