Sir Steve Redgrave is a retired rower. Redgrave’s strength is rowing was in sweep oared rowing. Redgrave battled sever illness for much of his career. He was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 1992 and in 1997; he was diagnosed with Diabetes mellitus type 2. Redgrave won the gold medal at the 1986 Nottingham World Championships in Coxed Pair. The following year, Redgrave won the silver medal in Coxed Pair and the gold medal in Coxless pair at the 1987 Copenhagen World Championships. Redgrave participated in the Olympics from 1984-2000. During that time, he won five gold medals and one bronze. In April 2006, Redgrave competed in his third London Marathon. Two years later, Redgrave took part in the Olympic Torch relay for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Redgrave was honored as a torchbearer for the 2012 Summer Olympics, where he carried the torch into the stadium. In 1987, Redgrave was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire and in 1997; he was promoted to Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
