Sonny Dykes

Sonny Dykes is the head football coach of the TCU Horned Frogs. Most recently, he led Southern Methodist University to their most successful period since the 1980s, going 30-18 in parts of five seasons. Dykes’ coaching career began 1994 as an assistant baseball coach for Monahans High School. Later that same year, Dykes switched his coaching to football where he became the running backs coach for J. J. Pearce High School. From 1995-96, Dykes coached at Navarro College as the running backs coach, quarterbacks coach, and the receivers’ coach. Dykes served as a graduate assistant and tight ends coach at the University of Kentucky in 1997. In 1999, Dykes returned to Kentucky as a wide receivers coach and special teams coordinator. The following season, he got a shot at his alma mater, Texas Tech. He spent seven years as an assistant at the same school where his father is the all-time winningest coach.

After his run on Mike Leach's Red Raiders staff, he spent three years as the offensive coordinator at the University of Arizona. That experience led him to his first head coaching job at Louisiana Tech. Dykes posted 8-5 and 9-3 seasons in his last two years and was named the head coach at California. After four seasons leading the Golden Bears, he ended up back in his home state as the head coach at SMU.
