About Steve Lappas
Steve Lappas is a 17-year college men’s basketball coach. His coaching career began at York (N.Y.) College after graduating from the City College of New York in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in education. His first head coach position was in 1988 at Manhattan College. Having played basketball throughout his childhood, Lappas was a three-year letter winner in college and his team’s captain for his junior year season. Unable to leave the sport he loved, his decision to pursue coaching was an easy one for him to make. Lappas has since coached at Villanova University for nine years and the University of Massachusetts Amherst for four years. With an overall coaching record above 500, Lappas has won 54% of his games as a head coach and was twice named the New York Daily News Coach of the Year, in 1981 and 1984. In addition, he was named MAAC Coach of the Year in ’92, Naismith College Coach of the Year in ’95, and has earned four championship titles. Lappas is currently a basketball commentator and studio analyst for CBS Sports Network.
