About Steve Phillips
Steve Phillips served as the general manager for the New York Mets from 1997 to 2003. He is also commonly known for his time spent as an American baseball analyst for ESPN. In his early years, Phillips was offered a football scholarship to Northwestern University and politely declined to instead sign a professional baseball contract after being drafted by the New York Mets in the 1981 amateur draft. Throughout the Mets and Detroit Tigers organizations, Phillips played as a second baseman and shortstop for six different minor league teams over a period of six years. As his player career was not taking off, Palermo joined the Mets’ front office in 1990 and slowly climbed is way up, being promoted to general manager in 1997. Two years after his time as general manager came to an end, Palermo was hired as a baseball color analyst for ESPN and made regular appearances on Baseball Tonight and SportsCenter for the following four years.
