About Tubby Smith
Prior to making a career out of coaching basketball at the collegiate level, Tubby Smith played the game of basketball at High Point University where he became four time letter recipient as well as an all-conference selection in his senior season. Just a few years after his collegiate playing career Smith began his coaching career when he became an assistant at VCU in 1979. For the next decade he continued to improve his skills as a coach in order to take full advantage of his first opportunity at becoming a head coach which came in 1991 at Tulsa. Since then Tubby has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year twice, the SEC Coach of the Year 3 times, and the Naismith College Coach of the Year in 2003. On the court, Smith led Kentucky to five SEC championships and the 1998 NCAA Men's Division 1 Basketball Championship while coaching at Kentucky. He has also been the head coach at Georgia, Minnesota, Texas Tech and Memphis, before his current role back home as the head coach at his alma mater.
