It has been a heady time for American women in sports. The U.S. women’s national team brought home the World Cup and Serena Williams is regarded in some circles as the most dominant athlete on the planet.
San Antonio Spurs’ assistant coach Becky Hammon added to the list this weekend by becoming the first woman to be a head coach during the NBA Summer League. Hammon piloted the Spurs’ squad like many other assistants do in the league’s summer games spread across Orlando, Utah, and Las Vegas.
Other women are getting their shot as well. Legend Nancy Lieberman is serving as an assistant with the Sacramento Kings and former WNBA player Lindsey Harding is a guest for summer league with the Toronto Raptors.
Hammon however is truly the tops when it comes to a coaching pioneer. The 2014-15 season was her first year on the Spurs bench and the first time any woman had become a full-time assistant coach for a major North American sports team.
The six-time WNBA All-Star played 16 seasons in the league with the New York Liberty and San Antonio Stars before getting her shot on the sidelines. During that playing career, she also spent time with several international teams and competed for Russia in two Olympics.
For her trailblazing achievements, Hammon has been a sought-after corporate speaker. She is next slated to be the keynote speaker at the Northwest Arkansas Business Women’s Conference on September 15th.
