Prior to the New Orleans Saints game against the San Francisco 49ers this Sunday, they brought in a legend of the game to address the team. Pro Football Hall of Famer Marcus Allen spoke to the Saints on Saturday to get the team set for their upcoming challenge.
Allen was able to provide some inspirational words and the ambitions he had as a football player. Several of the Saints players wore his Los Angeles Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs throwback jerseys.
They certainly heeded Allen's words as well. They ran for a season-high 248 yards and defeated the 49ers 41-23.
During a career split between both the Raiders and Chiefs, Allen rushed for 12,243 yards and set a league record with 123 rushing touchdowns. He also gained over 5,000 receiving yards, becoming one of the first true dual-threat running backs.
Allen was elected to six Pro Bowls and was a two-time first-team All-Pro. In 1985, he was the NFL Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year.
The previous year, Allen set a Super Bowl record with 191 rushing yards on the way to a Raiders victory and Super Bowl XVII MVP honors. In addition to being enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, he is also a former Heisman Trophy winner and College Football Hall of Fame inductee.
