The BYU Baseball First Pitch Fundraising Dinner/Auction generally attracts a top name from the world of baseball to serve as keynote speaker. It makes perfect sense that their guest this year is also one of the all-time great Mormon athletes.
Two-time National League Most Valuable Player Dale Murphy will speak at the fourth-annual event on January 27th. The night of festivities will be held in Provo at the NuSkin Ballroom.
In addition to the auction, dinner and Murphy's presentation, the Cameron Tuckett award will also be given to one BYU player who gives top-notch effort in academics and citizenship as well as baseball. Tickets to attend the evening are $150 per person, $250 per couple and $1000 for a table of ten.
Murphy played 15 of his 18 major league seasons with the Atlanta Braves and was one of the top players in baseball during the 1980's. He made seven All-Star teams in the decade and was the NL MVP in 1982 and 1983.
Murphy also won five consecutive Gold Gloves as an outfielder from 1982-1986. He led the NL in home runs and RBIs twice, finishing his career with 398 homers and just over 2,111 hits.
In 1994, the Braves retired Murphy's number 3 jersey. He is a member of the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame and Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.
