The Philadelphia Flyers decided and outside the box choice was what they needed to make with the hiring of the 19th head coach in franchise history.  In jumping from the University of North Dakota, Dave Hakstol hopes he can be a difference maker. 

Hakstol is the first coach to go straight from college to the NHL since “Miracle on Ice” head man Herb Brooks underwent the feat with the Minnesota North Stars in 1987. The last coach to make the leap with no prior professional experience was Bob Johnson when he joined the Calgary Flames in 1982.  

In 11 seasons with North Dakota, he won 289 games.  Each season the squad also qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

Hakstol piloted the program to seven Frozen Fours, including one this year.  In total, he has helped develop 20 NHL players. 

In 2000, he rejoined his alma mater as an assistant coach before becoming the head coach four years later.  After playing collegiately at North Dakota, Hakstol also spent five years in the minors.
