Former Philadelphia Eagles Coach Dick Vermeil Talks About the Super Bowl Champions at Speaking Engagement

Dick Vermeil is decades removed from his tenure as Philadelphia Eagles head coach, but that does not mean his connection with the team is not strong. Vermeil recently discussed the Eagles Super Bowl triumph as the speaker for the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Dinner.

The event was held at the Best Western Genetti Hotel and Conference Center on Friday night. Vermeil focused on the background of Philadelphia head coach Doug Pederson.

He said Pederson's experience working with coaches like Andy Reid and Jon Gruden made it clear he would be a success. Vermeil also drew parallels between Nick Foles stepping in for the Eagles and Kurt Warner stepping in for his Rams team in 1999.

That season, Vermeil, Warner and the Rams defied the odds to win Super Bowl XXXIV. Vermeil was also named NFL Coach of the Year for the first and only time in his career.

His run with the Rams began in 1997 after a 15-year hiatus from coaching. Vermeil got his first head coaching gig with the Eagles and led them to an NFC championship in 1980.

He guided Philadelphia to four straight playoff appearances from 1978 to 1981. Vermeil is a member of the Philadelphia Eagles Hall of Fame at the St. Louis Football Ring of Honor.
