“Magnificent Seven” Olympian Set to Speak to Local Sports Leaders in Central Florida

Dominique Dawes, esteemed gymnastics legend and Olympic gold medalist, will be the keynote speaker at the Greater Orlando Sports Commission’s 8th annual Celebrating Women in Sports Luncheon at Addition Financial Arena, University of Central Florida, on September 16, 2026. Previous keynotes have included prominent sportswomen such as Doris Burke and Misty May-Treanor.

A three-time Olympian (1992, 1996, 2000), Dawes was part of the historic "Magnificent Seven," the first U.S. women’s team to win Olympic gold in 1996. She also became the first African American woman to win an individual Olympic gymnastics medal, earning bronze on floor exercise. Dawes has won multiple medals at World Championships and Nationals, earning her the nickname "Awesome Dawesome."

Organizers for the event have noted that the luncheon has become a staple of annual sports leadership events, drawing well over 750 attendees last year and recognizing those who have made an impact in their local sports community. Dawes’ presentation will be a candid fireside chat while also honoring this year’s local leaders.

Beyond gymnastics, Dawes graduated from the University of Maryland, performed on Broadway, served as co-chair of the President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition, and worked as a commentator. Today, she runs the Dominique Dawes Gymnastics & Ninja Academy, advocating for a positive youth sports culture, health, fitness, and empowerment, themes she will echo at the event.
