Wolverines Break Big Ten's 25-Year Title Drought as "Hail to the Victors" Echoes Through Indianapolis

The 2025-2026 college basketball season culminated in the NCAA men's basketball national championship game on April 6 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, where the No. 1 seed Michigan Wolverines defeated the No. 2 seed UConn Huskies 69-63, earning their second national title, and their first since 1989.

The contest was a gritty, low-scoring defensive battle with Michigan leading 33-29 at halftime. In the second half, Michigan pulled ahead by as much as ten, but UConn narrowed the deficit to three with two minutes left. Michigan sealed the win with a crucial three-pointer from Elliott Cadeau and strong defensive stops in the final minute. He emerged as the star for Michigan, leading all scorers with 19 points and earning Final Four Most Outstanding Player honors for his clutch play throughout the tournament.

UConn, seeking its third title in four years under Dan Hurley, struggled to find offensive rhythm against Michigan's stingy defense. The Huskies shot poorly from beyond the arc and couldn't consistently break down Michigan's perimeter pressure. Despite strong efforts from players like Alex Karaban and others, UConn fell short but exemplified a “never die” attitude.

Michigan's path to the title included a dominant Final Four win over Arizona, and a patched-together starting five from the transfer portal, highlighting its depth and momentum under head coach Dusty May, now in his second year at Ann Arbor. The victory also ended the Big Ten conference’s national championship drought, unbroken since Michigan State in 2000.
