With a simple task, Washington Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer is contributing to a great cause. Scherzer and his wife, Erica, have partnered with the Nationals Dream Foundation to start Baseball Cards for a Cause in May.
Individuals can now send in cards to be signed along with a $25 donation. The money will go towards the Washington National Youth Baseball Academy.
Scherzer is off to a great start in his first season pitching for the Nationals. He was named to his third straight All-Star team and currently boasts a 10-7 record with a 2.11 ERA and 150 strikeouts in 132 innings.
On June 20th, Scherzer threw the first no-hitter of his career against the Pittsburgh Pirates. So far, the Nationals have had a great return on the seven-year, $210 million contract they inked him to this offseason.
Scherzer had spent the previous five seasons with the Detroit Tigers, where he emerged as one of the best pitchers in baseball. In 2013, he went 21-3 and won the American League Cy Young.
In each of the past two seasons, Scherzer led the AL in wins. For his career, he currently stands at 101-57 with 3.44 ERA and 1,471 strikeouts.
